Nottingham Forest versus Huddersfield Town - The richest match in football
The EFL Championship play-off final, often dubbed ‘the richest game in football’, took place on Sunday 29th May 2022 between Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town.
Nottingham Forest have been promoted to the Premier League for the first time since 1999 with a victory over Huddersfield Town in the Championship playoff final at Wembley on Sunday.
An own goal from Huddersfield defender Levi Colwill was enough for Forest to secure victory in the play-off final, dubbed the "richest match in football" due to the prize of a place in the Premier League, alongside the lucrative broadcasting deals and prize money that come with it. Ahead of 2020’s showdown between future Premier League rivals Fulham and Brentford, sports financial analysts Deloitte crunched the numbers. They say promotion will mean an increase in revenue of at least £135million over the next three seasons for the triumphant club. That could rise to £265m over a five-year period if the club avoids relegation in their first season in the Premier League.
Nottingham Forest, who were playing at Wembley for the first time since its redevelopment in 2007, held on for a narrow victory and will now re-take their place in the Premier League for the first time since 1999. Sunday's victory means they will now join Bournemouth and Fulham in next season's Premier League, who won automatic promotion from the Championship. It has been a grueling 49-game season for Nottingham Forest which has inevitably made the victory that much sweeter.
